ReacTIVision is an open source, cross-platform computer vision framework for the fast and robust tracking of fiducial markers attached onto physical objects, as well as for multi-touch finger tracking.

Through a webcam, the fiducial is recognized by Tuio (a simple yet versatile protocol designed specifically to meet the requirements of table-top tangible user interface) that projecting the object wich the fiducial is connected. We have connected our project (swf format) at each fiducial so that this mean can be used for the Open Day, a day on which our Faculty is open to the public for to know their our works.

In prevision of this event, we have designed the fiducial as our business card.

“How could it be a world without money?” This is a question that Yaniv Steiner asked ours during his course.

I created the Bank of Time, a concept of a world system where everyone works for to provide a service at the other people, without to receive any money. The Bank of Time as all power and controls that the system works through a hierarchical structure.

Progetto come processo

La domanda“come potrebbe funzionare un mondo senza soldi?”appare piuttosto strana durante un corso per la formazione di un designer perché la risposta chiama in causa una serie di fattori che sembrano prescindere dal suo futuro campo di applicazione. Ma in realtà non è proprio così.

Innanzitutto, se il designer si pone come una figura in grado di risolvere le esigenze dell’uomo, tutte le cose che devono essere prese in considerazione per rispondere ad una domanda di questo tipo, riguardano strettamente l’uomo: il valore da dare alle cose, il reperimento e l’utilizzo dei materiali e ancora più influente di tutti l’inclinazione umana che ne modifica i comportamenti.

Ovviamente ritenere valida una risposta a questo tipo di domanda risulta impossibile in quanto non si può sapere se le ipotesi portate avanti siano quello più giuste proprio perché non possono essere verificate nella realtà prossima. Non potrà mai esserci una soluzione giusta o sbagliata a priori, ma è importante l’acquisizione da parte di ognuno della capacità di porsi in maniera critica di fronte al proprio progetto, per risolvere le cose che non vanno bene, di modo che, forte della convinzione di quello che ha fatto, sia in grado di difenderlo e sostenerlo contro ogni obiezione attraverso giustificazioni e soluzioni che risolvano i problemi di volta in volta scaturiti. E questo è molto importante per un progettista perché, soprattutto quando si lavora nel campo delle innovazioni, le risposte da parte del pubblico alle novità, saranno sempre abbastanza ostili e dovrà essere il progettista a convincere il proprio cliente, o committente, che l’investimento non costituisca per forza un fallimento, difendendo la validità del proprio progetto. Più il campo sarà innovativo, più questo compito risulterà difficile. Cosa di più utile per acquisire questa capacità che progettare un mondo senza soldi, una cosa apparentemente inattuabile in un mondo in cui tutto ruota intorno ad essi?

Inoltre avere come scopo questo tipo di progetto, proprio perché non applicabile nel breve periodo, è un esercizio molto particolare perché porta la mente a pensare a qualcosa al di fuori della solita routine, ad uscire fuori dalla scatola potremmo dire. Insegna a lavorare in modo creativo e innovativo, anticipando i tempi e le esigenze e arrivando al momento in cui i tempi sono maturi con un progetto finito e indagato nei particolari, battendo sul tempo la creatività degli altri concorrenti del campo.

Inoltre, se è vero che l’inserimento del denaro come la sua eliminazione necessita di studi molto approfonditi in campi specifici come ad esempio quello sociologico, economico, etc, in sostanza si tratta di un vero progetto che potrebbe essere equiparato a quello di un designer perché il processo è sempre lo stesso:la progettazione attraverso un concentrato di differenti conoscenze, azioni, metodologie e strumenti per la produzione di qualcosa di concreto (un manufatto se si tratta di un designer, un’attività economica per un economista, etc).

Quello che è necessario ad un designer per poter svolgere bene la propria attività, non può essere circoscritto in un insieme di nozioni e capacità ben definite. Proprio per questo qualsiasi cosa che possa ampliarne il bagaglio di conoscenze, risulta essergli utile. La sua formazione non termina mai perché lavora a stretto contatto con le esigenze dell’uomo, che sono in continua mutazione e che abbracciano quindi un’infinità di ambiti. Progettare un’interfaccia, migliorare un servizio di modo che risponda meglio alle esigenze dell’utente, progettare una sedia o una lampada, sono i temi che sembrano essere più appropriati nel momento della formazione di un progettista, ma di quest’ultima ne considera solo la parte più superficiale. Quello che veramente è necessario acquisire, è un processo progettuale che possa essere alla base di ogni progetto futuro, anche se non sempre verrà applicato in maniera assoluta. Anche scrivere un testo necessita di un processo progettuale perché prevede l’organizzazione della struttura narrativa per poter giungere ad una comunicazione chiara ed efficace. Tutto ciò che richiede progettazione, è un utile esercizio durante la formazione. Organizzare un mondo senza soldi significa prendere in considerazione una miriade di questioni le più disparate tra loro e cercare di organizzarle in modo che siano conciliabili al nostro concept di un mondo senza soldi.

Zenon’s Paradox

In September, I partecipated at Ani-Matti, the Summer School organizated by the laboratory of AnimazioneDesign in the Facoulty of Architecture in Alghero. Sabrina Melis, Michela Anedda and me have realized a comic interpretation of the Zenon’s Paradox . For this little animation, we have combined stop motion and clay animation with moving image design (After Effects).

We wanted to communicate our opinion of the design, through a game of chess between design linked to the function and design linked to the aesthetics.

This post is dedicated to the new application for the iPhone that Ornella Giau and me designed starting from a code by Yaniv Steiner.

iPhault is a small trick to do to friends. It consists in macking believe who touches the iPhone left on the table, to have created a damage to the system: icons of the display fall down, a strange error signs will start to be displayed in the background, until a final black screen. This is because the application was programmed to display a sequence, frame by frame images, simulating a crash video, once the sensor of the movement feels a vibration. The idea arose because we wanted to create a small game to hit those people who are unable to avoid to browses phones left in a moment unattended. We found simulating a crash the most interesting because who is not afraid of viruses that cause irreparable damage to items of technology?!

This are the four flows of simple applications developed by Yaniv Steiner: Magic Card(the one we chose), Moving Pictures, 8 Ball and GirlFriend.

We have made some changes to the original flow and this is the one for iPhault..

We made icon, the initial splash, and the static image (typical iPhone interface) and all the images that appear on the screen once the application starts. When the sensor detects a vibration images in succession appaer of the screen, that fake to display the damage has broken it.

Realizzare un’applicazione per l’iPhone, il nuovo telefono multimediale sviluppato da Apple, prevede una serie di passi più o meno complessi. Bisogna innanzitutto partire dalla scelta di un concept, cioè il concetto che vogliamo sviluppare all’interno dell’applicazione.

Il secondo passo consiste nel realizzare il flow chart. Questo è la visualizzazione grafica di un problema complesso che viene scomposto in una serie logica di passaggi elementari, che devono essere esplicitati in modo chiaro ed univoco senza creare ambiguità nella dichiarazione delle istruzioni da eseguire. Viene utilizzato in molti campi, ma è soprattutto in Informatica che trova la maggiore applicazione, per rappresentare graficamente i programmi, che poi devono essere implementati in un codice dal programmatore. I passaggi all’interno del flow sono rappresentati attraverso nodi in una struttura ad albero. Ogni nodo è collegato al precedente e al successivo attraverso connessioni che indicano la successione logica e, tendenzialmente, ognuno di essi può essere rappresentato in forme differenti secondo l’istruzione che contiene al suo interno: ad esempio un’ellisse per l’inizio e la fine, un rettangolo per l’istruzione semplice o un rombo per la scelta tra diverse alternative. Imparare questo mezzo è utilissimo quando si vuole ad esempio creare un sito web, per cercare di trovare l’organizzazione adatta alla comunicazione che s’intende fare.

Il flow di iPhault, l’applicazione realizzata durante il corso di Interaction, deriva da quello creato per l’applicazione Magic Card, costituito da quattro passaggi, in cui le istruzioni si eseguono in sequenza lineare. Dall’avvio dell’applicazione che avviene attraverso un click sull’icona, per pochi secondi compare sul display lo Splash. Dopodiché si visualizzerà un’immagine statica fino a quando il sensore di movimento, dell’iPhone stesso, non avvertirà una vibrazione che farà apparire sullo schermo una nuova immagine.

Nel nostro flow abbiamo modificato la fine poiché iPhault, una volta che il sensore avverte il movimento, invece dell’immagine finale, farà comparire una serie di immagini in successione in modo da simulare un piccolo video. Realizzandolo abbiamo capito come si scompone un’applicazione in passaggi semplici, quali sono tutte le immagini che poi sarebbero dovute essere visualizzate e quindi disegnate, quali informazioni era necessario evidenziare per far in modo che chi implementa in seguito la nostra applicazione lo faccia senza tralasciare niente. Un esempio di elementi utili al programmatore sono ad esempio le scritte”attendere pochi secondi”(tra lo Splash e l’immagine statica) o “rilevamento del movimento”(prima dell’avvio dell’animazione). È importante realizzare i flow evitando l’utilizzo della grafica ed evidenziando solo i passaggi logici poichè è solo di questi che il programmatore ha bisogno per il suo lavoro. È utilissimo imparare questo mezzo oltre che per questo scopo anche per l’organizzazione di un sito o per l’organizzazione di un testo il cui scopo è la comunicazione di un concetto.

A questo punto è necessario disegnare le immagini che saranno visualizzate all’avvio dell’applicazione, l’eventuale splash e l’icona di avvio. Realizzare queste parti richiede la massima attenzione perché è attraverso l’interfaccia che s’identifica il prodotto. È, infatti, solo tramite questa che la persona interagisce con il prodotto, dipende da essa se l’utilizzo risulta semplice o complesso, è tramite questa se un prodotto viene apprezzato o detestato e di conseguenza acquistato o meno. È necessario quindi che l’interfaccia venga realizzata in modo che l’utilizzo risulti semplice e intuitivo: pensata per risolvere le esigenze dell’utente attraverso una grafica chiara in cui i comandi vengono esplicitati univocamente.

Una volta realizzate queste, è necessario creare il programma attraverso il codice di programmazione: un particolare linguaggio che la macchina è in grado di comprendere, pensato per creare dei software attraverso i quali si impartiscono istruzioni all’hardware che le deve eseguire. Apple utilizza per l’iPhone, xcode, un linguaggio molto complesso che può essere utilizzato solo dai suoi sistemi operativi. Scrivere un programma attraverso xcode richiede una grande pratica perché utilizza un linguaggio molto differente dagli altri, inoltre all’interno le istruzioni devono essere dichiarate dettagliatamente senza tralasciare nessun passaggio e ogni volta che si crea un documento si aprono numerosi file collegati che è difficile tenere sotto controllo. Più semplice risulterebbe utilizzare Action Script (il linguaggio utilizzato da Flash) che, a differenza, ha un’interfaccia molto chiara, apre nella stessa finestra sia la parte grafica sia quella scritta del programma, inoltre utilizza un linguaggio molto simile agli altri di modo che anche una persona poco esperta può avere un facile accesso. Allo stesso tempo, però, xcode è in grado di velocizzare la compilazione che avviene già durante la scrittura del programma e si possono tenere sotto controllo tutti i parametri.

A questo punto è necessario assegnare un nome all’applicazione per poterla presentare alla Apple Store per la pubblicazione. La Apple richiede inoltre quattro immagini di anteprima che mostrino il suo funzionamento(screenshots), un’altra immagine di 512×512 pixel e infine di stilare un breve testo di descrizione con un taglio commerciale, sottolineando le caratteristiche peculiari. Queste serviranno per creare la pagina di presentazione all’interno del sito iTunes Store dove l’utente potrà acquistarla.

Dopo aver completato il design della nostra nuova applicazione ci siamo accorti di avere inconsapevolmente violato un diritto di proprietà intellettuale. Per diritto di proprietà intellettuale, quasi in tutte le nazioni, s’intende il diritto che un soggetto (persona, azienda, ecc) esercita nei confronti di una sua creazione mentale o di una sua invenzione. Si possono elencare diversi tipi, ad esempio il brevetto, il marchio o il copyright. Il brevetto è la proprietà che l’ideatore di una nuova invenzione detiene per un certo periodo e obbliga chiunque volesse utilizzarla a richiederne preventivamente la licenza. Il marchio, invece, è il diritto che uno ha su un suo prodotto e viene utilizzato per cercare di differenziarlo sul mercato, mentre il copyright è il diritto che l’autore di un’opera esercita nella sua creazione per controllarne la riproduzione o il riattamento da parte di terzi. Violare questo diritto è punito dalla legge come plagio quando un soggetto utilizza delle cose create da altri, facendole passare per proprie.

È il copyright che noi abbiamo violato, perché per realizzare le immagini dell’animazione di iPhault, abbiamo utilizzato la fotografia dell’interfaccia dell’iPhone, di proprietà Apple. Nonostante quindi l’applicazione, dopo essere stata programmata da Yaniv Steiner, possa considerarsi pronta, ci troviamo nell’impossibilità di proporla per la pubblicazione perché verrà sicuramente rifiutata.

Per chi volesse specializzarsi nella creazione di nuove applicazioni o per chi volesse occuparsi di grafica per l’web, appare quasi scontata la conoscenza della programmazione. Altrettanto potrebbe non esserlo, invece, per gli altri campi del design, anche se il propagarsi dell’informatica in tutti gli ambiti renda ormai improbabile per un futuro designer sottrarsi a questa conoscenza. Nella progettazione in generale è, infatti, utile conoscere il limite da porre alla realizzazione di un progetto, per evitare di disegnare delle cose la cui programmazione risulta impossibile e non supportata dalla tecnologia. Inoltre siccome tutta la progettazione presto diventerà quasi esclusivamente digitale, un progettista potrebbe trovarsi di fronte alla necessità un giorno di doversi creare un nuovo plug-in o di modificare direttamente parti del software che utilizza.

The Facolty of Architecture, has organized for our Design’s Course, the workshops of Interaction Design and I attended the one by Konrad Baumann, a professor in the Faculty Joanneum in Graz. My group (Ornella Giau, Francesco Fogu, Erica Floris, Maria Chiara Sotgiu, Nicola vargiu and me) examined the children, has deciding to create something for them. We did the interviews, create scenarios and evaluated the possible improvements regarding the problems encountered.

From the interview we have done to learn how children are interested a simple games that stimulate their senses. In our scenario we have created a family with an average standard of living, that their living in a small house on the outskirts of a big city, far from grandparents.

Then we created an interactive piece where the child can draw with a finger and erase with a touch, to keep its draw or choose to send it in real time to the grandmother who is far away. He can also chat or video to make the distance with her less problematic. This is the demonstration video of our project, feasible now, but thought for the future…

We made the interface through a careful study of the icons to make it simple to use, both for children and for those who want to interact with them.

During the course of Interaction Design by Yaniv Steiner we are studying applications for the iPhone. In particular, the last one that I’m realizing with Ornella Giau, serves to future parents whitch helped them in the choice of their child name.

The first phase of the work was to decide what kind of functions the software provided and we, as a class group, made a brainstorming on the problem evalueting the different proposal’s pros and cons. Once decided on this matter we divided in smaller groups to carry out separetly the flow of the application.

We also started to make some proposal for the icons, but there still work to do in this direction.

Arrrogudottu and Soffialovia

In the Interaction design’s laboratory, with Ornella Giau, Luna Gasparini, Elisabetta Spissu and Gabriele Desogus, we had realize the concept of a simple and useful applications to be included in the iPhone, which could include the accelerometer technology of GPS, the internet, the calls, the camera and the microphone. We designed ARRROGUDOTTU and SOFFIALOVIA, creating key images that should be displayed within the i-Phone when using these applications.

Logotype “Alghero”

This project consisted in the creation of a logo for thealghero’s city, for foster her from the tourist and coultural point of view. I decided to concentrate my study on one aspect of the city: the sea and in particular of the sea urchin. At this fruit, for severa years, the municipality dedicates a festival in Jenuary and February. It’s a very important event because it attracts tourism from all parts of Sardinia and also overseas, in a time of the year when it is almost absent. The sea urchin is a fruit of the sea that comes in different variations of quality and of aesthetic: the color of the quills can vary from black, green, red, to purple. It is also an important resource for the city and a delicious dish for your kitchen.

Substituting to the rouded letters the image of the hedgehog plugs, I tried to create the image of the bunch that is in
nature on the rocks or in baskets of fishermen. For the other letters instead I used a font that represents at best the irregural forms of the sea: the pieces of wood, rocks, that water with its force change.

I did the tests zoom in and out, of positive and negative, to see if legibility was maintained.

During the Graphics Element course, by Mario Piazza, I made two different projects. The first concerns the study of an ancient lapide, with the photographic and graphic relief through the frottage technique, the research of the proportion rules between the different letters and the reconstruction of the alphabet. For the letters that there weren’t, I have tried to rebuild following the compositional rules derived from the others.

A second step was the digitization of manual studies and so the rewrite of the lapide using the new created alphabet.

Zu was designed during the Laboratory by Isao Hosoe, with my group EBiEmme, composed of me, Elisabetta Spissu and Marcello Ricco. It takes inspiration from fractal, a geometric concept studied by Mandelbrot and still used today for try to give a rule a seemingly chaotic phenomena.

Zu consists of seven elements, all of the same shape but of different proportions, each of which is retained within the larger one. Each element can be used individually or be a unique form with others, thanks to presence of two handles that lock full extraction and that their semi, have the potential to be snodabile in both ways and then to assume different conformations.

It can be used as a divider of space, as toys for children, to build temporary seating or to sit astride using the near element as little table..

Seven Capital Vices

This animation we made with Adobe After Effects during the Laboratory Moving by Nicolò Ceccarelli, in the first year’s Design Course, with Michela Anedda and Sabrina Melis. The project consisted in the realization of a short film communicates the theme through the animation of the subjects by some works art which was associated with one of the seven vices.

The concept of the project was then told through the Lego Mindstorm software. We made the cake, on which we placed the apples, the whole theme of the animation and each symbol of a vice, a snake and the earthly paradise with Adam and Eve.

Waitergame

This is waitergame that I made with my class group during the course of Interaction. This is a computergame with which you play through the Nintendo controller dell’wii, without the need to buy the console. You must hold and balance a tray on which there are some glasses on the verge of falling and avoid their drop. The waiter’s task, when the tray is too much inclined, becomes easier due to the customer’s shoutings who jeer at him before the glasses fall.

Chill-Oh

With my group basamimami, in the course of Interaction design by Yaniv Steiner during the first year of my studies, I realized CHILL-OH. This is a controller designed and built, to replace the computer keyboard, too heavy and forced to unnatural movements in the game “Frets on Fire.” Here you can see an image that represents it.

Golden Section

These are refunds that I did to search the presence of the golden section, hidden within works of art. A search which was to observe only the presence of this relationship and not say the use of conscious and intentional by the artist. I worked on a monument, the Church di San Giovanni of Oristano, and a work of Piero della Francesca, Madonna della Misericordia, in which I have noticed the presence of a secret geometry based on golden ratio.

Although the Church does not have symmetry, it can be seen from the geometrical reconstruction, such as the golden section was used for the building of a less work.

Logotype”Banco di Sardegna”

This is the project with which I patecipated at the competition for the redesign of the logo by Banco Di Sardegna. The original logo was inspired by the figure of the Pintadera (a stamp used to mark the bread in Sardinia) e and had to be modified because it was too closed, a circle, and now right with the needs of image of the bank.

My proposal has maintained the image of Pintadera as inspiration, but it has evolved into a form away from the usual pattern: two parties meet to represent the perfect union between the bank and the customer.
